Réjane was born Gabrielle Charlotte Réju as the the daughter of an actor. She studied with the comedian Régnier at the Convervatory in Paris. In 1874 she won a second prize for comedy and in 1875 she made her debut in " La Revue des deux-mondes" at the théâtre du Vaudeville. In 1883 she was successful in "Ma camarade" (1883) by Henri Meilhac. In 1888 she created the title part of "Germinie Lacerteux" by Jules and Edmond de Goncourt. Marcel Proust was in the audience and saw her for the first time. He would use her and Sarah Bernhardt as models for his character Berma in his "À la recherche du temps perdu".

In 1893 Réjane's part as Catherine in "Madame Sans-Gêne" by Victorien Sardou at the Vaudeville theatre made her famous. In the same year she married her lover Paul Porel, the director of the Odeon theatre. They had a daughter, Germaine, who became an actress. Their son Jacques (1893-1982) was a writer. He and Proust became friends after the First World War.

In 1895 Réjane toured in the role of Madame Sans-Gêne in the USA with great success. She was painted by Albert Besnard in 1898. She divorced Porel in 1905 and in 1906 she opened the Théâtre Réjane in Paris. She appeared in several silent movies and in 1911 she played Madame Sans-Gêne once more. She managed the theatre until 1918. She received the Legion of Honor three months before her death in 1920. She was buried at Passy cemeery in the grave of her ex-husband who had died in 1917.

Events
19/12/1888Premiere of "Germinie Lacerteux" by Edmond de Goncourt at the Odéon Theatre in Paris. The play was based on the novel of the same name written by Jules and Edmond de Goncourt.
