Laure de Chevigné was born as Laure de Sade in Passy, Paris. She was a great-granddaughter of the famous Marquis de Sade. Her father died in 1868 and her mother died in 1876. She lived with relatives in the countryside until she married Count Adhéaume de Chevigné (1847-1911), who worked most of the year for Count Henri d'Artois of Chambord, the pretender to the throne of France of the legitimists, who lived in Frohsdorf in Austria. Only two months per year she was allowed to join her husband in Austria, but she managed to master the rigid court etiquette quickly and Henri liked her.

In 1880 her daughter Marie-Therèse was born and in 1882 her son François. They were not admitted to Henri's court and stayed with mother during her stays at Frohsdorf. In 1883 Henri died. After that she headed a musical and artistic salon that was frequented by many royalists. Bizet's wife Geneviève Halévy became a friend. She aso befriended Isabella II of Spain. She knew Yvette Guilbert, Hortense Schneider and Réjane well. She died in 1936 at home in Paris.
