Jules de Goncourt was the son of Marc-Pierre Huot de Goncourt, an officer in the Napoleontic army. He collaborated with his brother Edmond on novels, art criticism and a journal. He contracted syphilis in 1850 in Le Havre and towards the end of his life this illness drove him insane. He died in 1870, aged 39. The Prix Goncourt was created in his honour.

19/12/1888Premiere of "Germinie Lacerteux" by Edmond de Goncourt at the Odéon Theatre in Paris. The play was based on the novel of the same name written by Jules and Edmond de Goncourt. Edmond adapted it for the stage. Despite the highly acclaimed performance by Réjane the play was not a success. [Goncourt, Edmond de][Réjane]
