Hermann von Kern came from a German family that had moved to Hungary. His talent for painting was discovered early and he was taught by Theo Böhm in Prague and Carl Rahl in Vienna. In 18767 he was sent to Düsseldorf by Baron Bötvös. His next station was Munich, where he befriended Franz Defregger and Hermann Kaulbach and worked with them under Karl Theodor von Piloty. After his return to Budapest he worked as a painter of portraits and genre pieces. In 1876 he moved to Vienna with his family. At that time he had ten children. There he continue his genre painting. In 1903 he moved from Vienna to Maria Enzersdorf where he continued his painting. He died there in 1912. His daughter Pauline von Kern was also a painter.
