Franz von Defregger was the son of the rich farmer Michael Defregger. After his father's death in 1860 he sold the farm and moved to Innsbruck. There he studied sculpture with Michael Stolz. In 1861 he went to Munich to study under Hermann Anschütz and Hermann Dyck. In 1863 he continued his studies in Paris, where he visited museums, art collections and studios. From 1867 to 1869 he studied in Munich under Karl von Piloty at the same time as Hans Makart and Gabriel Max.

He settled in Munich and became an important genre painter. He was appointed Professor of History Painting at the Academy in Munich in 1878. In 1880 a large villa was built for him at the Königinstraße in Munich and there he received many distinguished guests. He was enobled in 1883. In 1910 he retired and in 1921 he died in Munich.
