Hermann von Kaulbach was the son of the painter Wilhelm von Kaulbach. He studied medicin in Munich but he switched to painting and studied under Karl von Piloty. He started painting historical scenes but his portraits of children made him famous.

In 1880 and in 1891 he travelled to Rome. In 1886 he became Professor of History Painting at the Academy of Arts in Munich. In 1906 he published a picture book that sold 135,000 copies.

His wife Sophie Schroll was the daughter of an engraver and they had three children.
