Wilhelm von Kerpern was the son of Lothar Franz Freiherr von Kerpen. He was educated at the Court of Trier and studied at Würzburg University. He abandoned his studies to start a military career in 1758. He was promoted to majr in 1778. In 1782 he participated in de Secpond turkish War. In 1788 he was promoted to Lieutenant colonel and in 1791 to colonel. In 1793 he took part in the First Coalition War and in 1794 he was promoted to major general and in emperor Franz II made him a Field marshal lieutenant. In 1798 he occupied Verona for the emperor. He participated in the Second Coalition War in 1799 but he retired in 1800 from active service and moved to Prague. In November 1800 he was recalled to the army where he held several further postions. In 1810 he was appointed Vice-President of the Court War Council and he moved to Vienna to take up this position. In 1813 Franz II ordered his retirement. dujring the last years of his life he lived in Vienna, where the Kerpengasse in Floridsdorf is named afer him. |
