After his father died in 1794 he founded a piano manufacturing business together with his sister Nanette Streicher-Stein. In 1796 he married Maria Josepha Dischler (1769-1855). They had a son, Karl Andreas Stein, who also became a piano maker.

In 1802 he ended his cooperation with Nanette and they had their own companies afterwards. His company was named André Stein. He knew Beethoven and maintained his instruments. In 1823 he visited Beethoven at Hetzendorf together with Friedrich Wieck. Their consersation was documented. In 1828 Wieck bought a grand piano from Stein for his daughter Clara.
