Carl Andreas Stein was the son of Matthäus Andreas Stein, in whose workshop he learned the profession of piano maker. As a pianist, he first appeared in public in 1818. He was also active as a composer and as a piano teacher. In 1828 he started his own workshop to make pianos in the Landstrasse area in Vienna. He managed to eliminate background noises from the keyboard, thus improving his instruments.

To study and to support his commerical activities, he visited Italy (1830) and Prague (1833). He also travelled to Augsburg, Paris and other cities. In 1844 he was appointed official piano maker to the court. His workhop produced circa 900 instruments but most of them are now lost. He died in 1863 in Vienna at the house that he had bought in 1841 from the piano maker Konrad Graff.
