Katharina Fröhlich became the fiancee of the poet and playwright Franz Grillparzer in 1821, but he never married her. Thus she became known as his 'eternal bride'.

In 1849 he rented a room at the house that belonged to her and her sisters at the Spiegelgasse 21 in Vienna. Grillparzer lived there until he died in 1872 and left all his posessions to the sisters. Katharina handed his papers over to the city of Vienna in 1872 and she founded the Grillparzer Prize and the Schwestern-Fröhlich-Stiftung.
