Son of an apothecary from Vienna. He studied painting under K. Haunold, E.J. Schindler and G. Kuehl. After Schindler died he married his widow Anna Sofie Bergen, Alma Mahler's mother. They had a daughter together, Maria. He was a co-founder ans business manager of the Secession in Vienna where he exhibited and worked for its magazine Ver Sacrum. When Klimt left the Secession in 1905 he followed him. During the 1930s he became a convinced nazi. When the Russians reached Vienna he was desparate and in his villa he committed suicide together with his daughter and her husband. Related persons cooperated with Klimt, Gustav was pupil to Kuehl, Gotthard was step-parent of Mahler, Alma was pupil to Schindler, Emil Jakob |
