Anna Sofie Bergen came from Hamburg. She worked as an operetta singer. She married the painter Emil Schindler on 4 February 1879 and she was three months pregnant at the time. Their daughter Alma was born on 31 August 1879 and she would become well known as Alma Mahler. Anna Sofie started an affair with the painter Julius Victor Berger, who lived in their house. He is almost certainly the father of her second daughter Margarethe, who was born on 16 August 1880. Later she started an affair with Schindler's pupil Carl Moll. After Schindler's death in 1892 she married Moll in 1895. They had another daughter, Maria, who was born on 9 August 1899.
