Christian Griepenkerl was born into a noble family in Oldenburg. The painter Ernst Willers (1803-1880) advised him to go to Vienna and there he attended Carl Rahl's private art school. In Vienna he worked at the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum (1864) and the Palais Tedesco. He became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1874 and from 1877 he headed a school there for history painting.

Griepenkerl had numerous students, among them Carl Moll, Richard Gerstl and Egon Schiele. In 1907/1908 he turned down the application by Adolf Hitler to enter the academy. He died in Vienna in 1916 after a short illness. He was to be buried at the Hietzing cemetery, but the city of Vienna decided to grant him a grave of honour at the Zentralfriedhof.
