The impressionist painter Ernest Rouart was the son of Henri Rouart, who collected art. He studied mathematics before he turned to painting. He was helped by Edgar Degas, who gave him lessons and encouraged him to copy old masters at the Louvre. Through Degas he met Julie Manet, the beautiful daughter of Berthe Morisot and Eugène Manet, Édouard Manet's brother. They married in 1900. He exhibited at the Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1899 and at the Salon des indépendants. In 1932 he organised the exhibition in honour of the centenary of Édourd Manet at the Orangerie.
