Julie Manet was the only child of painter Berthe Morisot and Eugène Manet, who was the brother of Édouard Manet. By the time she was sixteen years old both her parents had died and Stéphane Mallarmé became her guardian. She was also supported by Renoir and he painted her in 1894. She looked very good and was also painted by her mother, Manet and other artists. In 1900 she married the painter Ernest Rouart. Her niece Jeanni Gobillard married Paul Valéry at the same time. She had three sons, Julien (b.1901), Clément (b.1906) and Denis (b.1908). Together with her husband she organised a Manet retrospective in 1932 and a Morisot exhibition in 1941. Rouart died in 1942 and Julie followed him to the grave in 1966. In 1987 her teenage diary was published.
