Carlotta Patti was the daughter of the tenor Salvatore Patti and the sister of the famous soprano Adelina Patti. Her mother Catarina Chiesa (known as Catarina Barilli) was also an opera singer.

She studied piano with Henri Herz before she focussed on singing like her sister. She was slightly handicapped after an accident during her youth and she limped in her walk. For this reason she didn't like to perform in operas and preferred concerts. She debuted in the USA in 1861 where she lived at the time with her family.

Although she never became as famous as Adelina her career was distinguished and she also performed in the England, Austria and Australia and in 1869 and 1872 she was back in the USA.

In 1879 she married the Belgian cellist and composer Ernest de Munck. This put an end to her public career although she continued to work as a teacher. With De Munck she lived at the Rue Pierre-Charron in Paris. In 1889 she died in Paris of cancer.
