Edmond Rostand was the son of the lawyer, economist, and financier Eugène Rostand (1843-1915) and Angèle Gayet, the daughter of a wealthy chemical manufacturer. He was an excellent scholar at the Lycée Thiers in Marseille. In 1884 he moved to Paris to study at the Collège Stanislas for another two years. In 1887 he won the Maréchal de Villars prize for an essay.

The family spent many summers in the spa resort of Bagnères-de-Luchon and there he wrote his play "Le Gant rouge" (1888) and "Les Musardises" (1890), a volume of poetry. In 1890 he married the poet and actress Rosemonde Gérard (1866-1953). They had two children, but in 1915 he would leave her for the actress Mary Marquet.

In 1894 his play in verse "Les Romanesques" was performed at the Comédie-Française with moderate success. "La princesse Lointaine" (1895) en "La Samaritaine" (1897) followed, both written for Sarah Bernardt (1844-1923). His great succes "Cyrano de Bergerac" for which he is remembered now, was first performed in 1897. In 1900 "L'Aiglon" was another success. He worked long on his play "Chantecler", but it failed when it was produced in 1910. During the first World War he supported the French soldiers with his poem "Le Vol de la Marseillaise" (1915). He died in 1918 of Spanish flu.

Rostand was buried at the Saint-Pierre cemetery in Marseille. His tomb was not cared for since the 1920s until it was restored in 2017.
