Alfred Berger was the son of Johann Nepolum Berger. He studied law, philosophy and literature. In 1878 he was enobled by emperor Francis Joseph I because of his father. From 1887 he worked as a private teacher in Vienna. In 1896 he became a professor of Philosophy in Vienna. In 1899 he married the actress Stella Loderbang.

From 1899 until 1909 he was the manager of the newly founded Deutschen Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. In 1910 he became the director of the Burgtheater and there he staged Hauptmann, Hebbel, Ibsen, Shaw and Wilde. He died in 1912 in Vienna.
