Eduard von Winterstein was the son of the landowner Hugo von Wangenheim (1834-1924) and his second wife, the actress Aloysia Dub (1832-1904). After teaching by his mother he entered the stage in Gera. He also worked at the newly opened theatre in Annaberg (that is now named after him) before he joined the Schillertheater in Berlin in 1895. In Annaberg he met his first wife, the Jewish actress Mina Wengers. They marrried in 1894 at the Wartburg and their son Gustav von Wangenheim was born in 1895. Four years later Minna committed suicide and he married the actress Hedwig Pauly in 1899. In 1898 he joined the Deutsche theater where he worked under Otto Brahm and an engagement at the Lessingtheater followed. From 1905 to 1920 he taught at Max Reinhardt's acting school. From 1913 onwards he also appeared in a total of 160 movies. Towards the end of the Second World War he was placed on the so called Gottbegnadeten-Liste by the nazis.
