Georg Kestner was the oldest son of the lawyer and archivarian Johann Christian Kestner and his wife Charlotte Buff. He was the godchild of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In 1802 he married Hneriette Partz (1784-1867), the daughter of the chief magistrate. They had four chilren.

He succeeded his father as Archival Council of Hanover. He also started a banking business together with his son Hermann. This became a success and it enabled him to build up an art collection consisting of 500 items. He also created a substantial collection of autographs. In 1842 he was one of the founders of the Hanover Artists' Association. He died in 1867 in Hanover and was buried at the Engesohde cemetery.
