Hermann Kestner was the son of Georg Kestner (1774-1867) and the grandson of Charlotte Kestner-Buff (1753-1828). In 1829 he started his law studies in Göttingen and in 1831 he continued them in Heidelberg.

As a composer he was the author of "Lieder der Goethezeit" and he was also a collector of musical manuscripts. He made the collections of his father Georg Kestner and his uncle August Kestner available to the city of Hanover in 1884 and these collections formed the basis for the Kestner Museum in that city.
