In 1829 he started his law studies in Göttingen and in 1831 he continued them in Heidelberg. As a composer he was the author of "Lieder der Goethezeit" and he was also a collector of musical manuscripts. He made the collections of his father Georg Kestner and his uncle August Kestner available to the city of Hanover in 1884 and these collections formed the basis for the Kestner Museum in that city. Hermann Kestner was a honorary citizen of Hanover and after he died in that city in 1890 he received a grave of honor at the Engesohde cemetery.
