Theodor Kestner was the fifth son of the lawyer Johann Christian Kestner (1741-1800) and Charlotte Kestner-Buff, who was loved by Goethe. He studied medicin in Jena from 1798 and in Göttingen from 1800. In 1802 he was promoted. Helped by Goethe in 1804 he settled in Frankfurt am Main as a physician. In 1813 he became a professor at the school of the Senckenbergischen Stiftung. In 1814 he became city physician of Frankfurt am Main and in 1816 he was made a state physician. He was he president of the Polytechnischen Gesellschaft from 1819 to 1820. In 1845 he was one of the founders of the Ärztlichen Verein. He was also an administrator of the Städelschen Kunstinstituts.
