Eduard Charlemont was the son of the painter Matthias Adolf Charlemont (1820-1871). His brother Hugo Charlemont (1850-1939) was a painter as well and his brother Theodor Charlemont (1859-1938) was a sculptor. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna where he first exhibited when he was fifteen years old. Eduard von Engerth was one of his teachers. From 1870 he worked in the studio of Hans Makart. His painting "The Guardian of the Seraglio" (also known as "The Moorish Chief" (1878) is now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Charlemont travelled in Italy and other countries and he settled in Paris, where he was influenced by Ernest Meisonnier. In 1885 he refused a position at the Art Academy in Vienna and he lived in Paris until 1904. In 1899 he won the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. He was best known for his small genre pieces and his decorative works. For the Burgtheater in Vienna he painted three murals. He died in Vienna in 1906.
