Josephine Wessely was educated privately before she attented the drama school at the Konservatoriums der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, the first public music school in Vienna. She debuted on 1 July 1876 as Luise in Friedrich Schiller's "Kabale und Liebe" at the Stadttheater in Leipzig. She worked in Leipzig until 1879. After guest appearances in Berlin and Vienna she was engaged at the Burgtheater in Vienna in 1879. In 1884 she was appointed Court Actress. Her contract at the Burghtheater was for life, but she died in 1887 of stomach cancer. She was buried at the Hütteldorfer Friedhof in Vienna. Her brother Carl Wessely was buried in the same graven.
