Eduard von Engerth was the son of the painter Josef Engerth. He was educated by his father and by his uncle, the theatre painter Johann Engerth. In 1837 he entered the Art Academy in Vienna, where Leopold Kupelweiser was his teacher. He travelled in France, England and the Netherlands to study and in 1847 he lived in Rome for half a year. In 1851 he travelled to Rome again and there Peter Cornelius helped him in his further development. In 1854 he was appointed director of the Art Academy in Prague and in 1865 he became a professor at the Art Academy in Vienna. In 1871 he became the director of the Belvedere Gallery. He was knighted in 1873. From 1874 to 1876 he was the director of Art Academy, but he gave up this position to continue his work at the Belvedere. He retired in 1892.
