Anton Azbe was born into a peasant family. He was a frail child and due to a spinal injury he was unable to work on the land. He started a commercial apprenticeship but he broke it off. He started his artistic training under Janez Wolf in Ljubljana. In 1882 he entered the Art Academy in Vienna where he was taught by Siegmund L'Allemand, August Eisenmenger and Christian Griepenkerl. In 1884 he continued his studied at the Art Academy in Munich. When he was 30 years old he started his own drawing school in Munich. It was especially popular with Eastern European Students. Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky and Marianne von Werefkin all studied at his school. He was a heavy smoker and in 1904 he was diagnosed with throat cancer. By the spring of 1905 he could hardly swallow any food. He underwent surgery, but he died later that year, only 43 years old. Marianne von Werefkin wrote in her diary that she cried at his grave when he was buried at the Nordfriedhof in Munich.
