In 1873 he left Munich and he lived with Johann Sperl in Berbling and in Bad Aibling. In 1892 he was appointed professor by regent Luitpold von Bayern. He suffered from a heart disease and from breathing difficulties and when his situation worsened in 1900 he was admitted to the private clinic of Wilhelm Olivier von Leube (1842-1922) in Würzburg.
