Napoléon Louis Bonaparte was the second son of Napoleon I's brother Louis Bonaparte and Hortense de Beauharnais, Napoleon I's stepdaughter. His father became King of Holland in 1806 and after his brother Napoléon Charles died in 1807 he became Prince Royal of Holland. He was also a possible successor to his uncle the Emperor, until Marie Louise gave birth to a son in 1811. In 1809 he received the title of Grand Duke of Berg from Napoleon I. His father abdicated as King of Holland in favour of his son on 1 July 1810. He was king Louis II until the French army invader the Holland. After the fall of Napoleon I he was forced to go into exile. On 23 July 1826 he married his cousin Charlotte, the daughter of Napoléon's elder brother Joseph. He settled in Italy with his younger brother Louis Napoléon and there they became involved with the Carbonari. He suffered from measles at the time he was forced to flee for the Austrian army and the papal army. He died in Forli on 17 March 1831. He was buried at Saint-Leu-la-Forêt, where his father was buried as well.
