Catherine Hogarth was the daughter of the journalist George Hogarth, who worked for the Edinburgh Courant. In 1824 the family moved to London. Her gather became a writer and critic for the Morning Chronicle where he met the young journalist, Charles Dickens. Dickens liked Catherine and they became engaged in 1835 and married on 2 April 1836. Her younger sister Mary came to live with them to support her. Dickens was very fond of Mary, but she died in his arms in 1837. In 1842 another sister, Georgina, joined the household to care for their children when Dickens and Catherine travelled to the USA. They had ten children over the years and Dickens started blaming Catherine for the family that was far larger than he would have wanted. Dickens started an affair with the young actress Nelly Ternan and at a certain moment Catherine may have received a bracelet that Dickens had bought for Ellen but was sent to her. There were also rumours that Dickens had an affair with Georgina. In June 1858 they formally separated, and Catherine moved to Gloucester Crescent in Camden Town with Charles Junior. The rest of the children remained at Tavistock House where Georgina continued to care for them. After the separation there was little contact between Catherine and Dickens. Dickens died in 1870 and shortly before her own death in 1879 she gave the letters Dickens had sent her to her daughter Kate and asked her to give them to the British museum so that the world would know that Charles had loved her once. She was buried at Highgate Cemetery in the grave where her daughter Dora had been buried in 1851.
