The landscape painter Émile Loubon was the son of the rich merchant Noël Augustin François Loubon. His mother was Anna Thérèse Michel. In Aix-en-Provence he studied drawing under Jean-Antoine Constantin, François Marius Granet and Kouis Mathurin Clérian. In 1829 he joined Granet on a trip to Rome. Granet liked the landscapes he created there and Loubon concentrated on painting and stayed in Rome for two years.

In 1831 he returned to France and settled in Paris. There he met Alexandre Gabiel Descamps, Constant Troyon and Thomas Couture. He also met Camille Roqueplan and considered himself his pupil. In 1833 the Salon in Paris awarded him a third class medal. In 1844 he paitned "Le Panorama de Martigues" for the Ministry of the Interior.

In 1845 he was forced to return to Aix-en-Provence because his father was ruined. In that year he succeeded Augustin Aubert as the director at the school for practical drawing in Marseille. In Marseille he founded the Salon du Cercle des amis des arts in 1846. 200 paintings were shown. In 1847 politicial events prevented another exhibition. He travelled to the Orient in 1849 where he painted "Vue de Nazareth".

He had married a formel model, but his contemporaries described her as beautiful but spoilt by him. In his last years Loubon felt that he had been exploited by society. He died of cancer in 1863. He was buried at the Saint-Pierre cemetery in Marseille. The bust on his grave monument was created by his pupil Marius Guindon.
