Henri Julien dumont was the son of Alfred Dumont, who was justice of the peace. He studied under Jules-Frédéric Ballavoine (1842-1914). He moved in Montmartre circles and he befriended Renoir, Gervex and Degas and from 1881 he first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français with "Tête de femme". After his first impressionist paintings were refused he exhibited them at the Salon des Indépendants. From 1887 he lived together with Ellen Andrée, a model of the Montmarte painters who also made herself a name as an actress. They would finally marry in 1921. His painting "Le Printemps et Fleur" (1890) was exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. In 1893 he created his poster "Yvette Guilbert aux Ambassadeurs". In 1905 he was one of the French painters who exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. By this time he mostly pointed flowers. He received the Légion d'honneur in 1914.
