Ellen André may have been the daughter of an army officer, but in Édouard Manet's notes the painter Edmond André Rocher (1873-1948) is mentioned as her father. She started her career as a model for the fashion house Worth. She visited the Café de la Nouvelle Athènes where she met many artists and in 1875 she modelled for the first time for Édouard Manet. She also worked as a model for Edgar Degas and Auguste Renoir. In 1878 she was the model for "Rolla" by Henri Gervex that caused a scandal at the Salon of 1878. She was noticed by the actor Lassouche (1828-1915) and an acting career followed. She entered the stage under the name of Ellen Andrée at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in 1879. Appearances at La Cigale and at the Folies Bergère followed. In 1881 Arnold Mortier (1843-1885) compared her in Le Figaro to Céline Chaumont (1846-1926). In 1887 she married the painter Henry Julien Dumont 1856-1936), but she kept her stage name. After he founded the Théâtre du Grand Guignol in 1897, Oscar Méténier (1859-1913) hired her for the drama "Lui!". In 1902 she played leading roles at the Théâtre Antoine. After playing in "Chéri" by Colette at the Théâtre Michel in 1920 she was very successful in more than 100 performances of Sacha Guitry's "Le Comédien". She died in 1933 and was buried at the Montmarte cemetery in Paris.
