Auguste von Gaffron und Oberstradam was the daughter of major Karl von Gaffron, who came from a noble family. Her mother was Julie Neagle from Ireland. She lived separate from her husband, the Prussian lieutenant Heinrich Conrad, when she met the anatomist Joseph Hyrtl during the 1860s. They settled in Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna in 1869 and they married in 1870. She mostly wrote poems that were published in newspapers. In 1875 "Gedichte" was published, followed by another volume of poetry in 1880. Her husband died in 1894 and after her own death in 1901 she was buried beside him in Perchtoldsdorf.
