Joseph Hyrtl studied medicine at the University in Vienna. He wrote a dissertation on the history of mericine. In 1837 he was appointed professor of anatomy at the university of Prague. In 1845 he returned to Vienna to become a professor at the University. In 1846 he published a handbook on human anatomy, "Lehrbuch der Anatomie des Menschen". It was reprinted 22 times and translated in many languages. Another publication was "Handbuch der topographischen Anatomie". He was specialised in producing and selling anatomical preparations. he also developed and expanded the Anatomical Museum at the University of Vienna. But his manner and contempt for work of others isolated him from his colleagues and he retired in 1874. After that he worked on publications in Perchtoldsdorf where he died in 1894.
