Louis-Raphaël Bischoffsheim was the eldest son of Nathan-Raphaël Bischoffsheim (1773-1814), who was a supplier to the French army in Mainz. After his father died he abandoned his studies and worked for Hayum Salomon Goldschmidt (1772-1843), the owner of a bank in Frankfurt am Main. In 1820 he went to Amsterdam were he founded his own bank. Together with his brother Jonathan-Raphaël Bischoffsheim he formed a financial company with branches in Antwerp and Brussels. In 1822 Louis-Raphaël married Hayum-Salomon Goldschmidt's daughter Amélie and they had two sons, Raphaël-Louis (1823-1906) and Henri Louis (1829-1908). Both became bankers. In 1846 Louis-Raphaël Bischoffsheim opened a bank in London and a company in Paris followed. In 1863 the companies merged into the Banque de Crédit et de Dépôt des Pays-Bas. He died in 1873 in Paris.
