Jonathan-Raphaël Bischoffsheim came from the German-Belgian Bischoffsheim family of bankers. His father Raphaël Nathan Bischoffsheim (1773-1814) was army contractor to the Electorate of Mainz. In 1827 he was a co-founder of the Bischoffsheim & Goldschmidt Bank. On 11 June 1832 he married Henriette Goldsmith (1812-1892) in Brussels and they had four children. Bischoffsheim was one of the Directors of the Banque de Belgique and a co-founder of the National Bank of Belgium. His banking activities and those of his brother Louis-Raphaël Bischoffsheim (1800-1873) formed the foundation of what would become the Paribas bank.
