André Charles Reille was a son of Maréchal Honoré Charles Reille (1775-1860) and a grandson of Maréchal André Masséna (1758-1817). He studied at the Military School of Saint-Cyr and in 1838 he was a cavalry lieutenant. In 1841 he was promtoed to captain. He was aide de camp to general Oudinot and in 1859 he was promoted to colonel. In that year he became aide de camp to emperor Napoleon III.

On 10 March 1870 he married Countess Louise Charlotte de Barbentane. It was Reille who handed Napoleon III's letter of surrender to king William of Prussia in 1870 and he accompanied the emperor in captivity. He died in 1887 in Antibes.
