Isabelle Waldberg was born Margaretha Isabella Maria Farner in 1911. She studied sculpture in Zürich. In 1936 she went to Paris where she worked on a thesis on Nietzsche and studied at the École des Hautes Études de la Sorbonne. In Paris she met and befriended Alberto Giacometti. She met the American author Patrick Waldberg in 1937. She changed her first name to Isabelle for him, because his first wife was called Margareta. After George Bataille's partner Laure died in 1938, Patrick and Isabel moved in with him.

In 1942 she followed Waldberg to New York. They married in September 1942. The writer and poet Michel Waldberg is their son. In New York they knew Duchamp, Breton and Arp. She created constructions in metal and exhibited her work exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and at the Peggy Gugenheim Gallery. In 945 she had her first solo exhibition. In 1946 she returned to Paris, where she used Duchamp's studio at the rue Larrray to produce abstract sculptures.

From 1975 she taught sculpture at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1981 a retrospective of her work was held in Bern. She died in 1990 in Chartres and was buried at the Montmartre cemetery in Paris.
