Marianne Viardot was the daughter of singer Pauline Viardot-Garcia and her husband Louis Viardot. She had a fine voice and her mother's friend Turgenev hoped that she would take up a singing career. Clara Schumann was impressed by her voice as well. Although she didn't pursue a career in music, in 1875 she performed work by Fauré with her sister Claudi. Gabriel Fauré fell in love with her and in July 1877 they were engaged. But in November she broke off the engagement. She sang in a performance of Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique". In 1881 she married the composer Alphone Duvernoy.
