Mathilde Salle was a successful dancer and performer at the Opéra in Paris. She was a typical modern woman, who repeatedly appeared in roles dressed as a man. She also rode a bicycle and played sports.

She was painted by Edgar Degas in 1886 and he created sculptures of her head. She also sat for other artists. She married Ernst Watigny and she died in 1934 is Paris.
