Daughter of Abraham Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Lea Salomon. She was the younger sister of the composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. The family moved from Hamburg to Berlin shortly after she was born. She had a very quick mind and read Greek excellently. She was also a fine singer and performed at the court of king Friedrich Wilhelm III with the Hofkapelle that was led by Felix. In 1832 she married the mathematician Peter Gustave Lejeune Dirichlet. In 1855 she moved with him to Göttingen where Peter succeeded Cark Friedrich Gauss. They were often visited in Göttingen by Karl August Varnhagen who described his visits in his diary. She died in 1858 in Göttingen.
