Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy was the son of the banker Abraham Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and his wife Lea Salomon. The composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy was his brother. Paul received a commercial training in London and Paris from 1831 to 1833. After completion he joined the family bank of which he became a partner in 1838. On 27 May 1835 he married Albertine Heyne, the daughter of the banker Heinrich Carl Heine and the sister of the mathematician Eduard Heine. They had several children. In 1871 he became the senior manager of the bank and he acted as financial advisor to the Prussian government. Privately he played the cello.
