Son of the philosopher Moses Mendelsson. In 1804 he married Lea Salomon. In 1805 their first child Fanny was born. She was as talented as her brother Felix, the famous composer and conductor who was born in 1809. Two more children followed.

Abraham was a partner of his brother Joseph at the bank Mendelssohn & Co, but in 1822 he started his own business in finance as a broker. In the same year he converted to Christianity. His children had been baptised six years before in order to improve their prospects.
