Anna Gouhenant was the daughter of the painter Adolphe Gouhenant (1804-1871), who abandoned his family to live in Texas. On 5 October 1853 she married the painter Charles Houry. She was a member of the Société pour l’amélioration du sort des femmes (Society for the Improvement of the Condition of Women) together with Stella Blandy, Hubertine Auclert and Maria Deraismes. In the late 1880s she was involved in Fourierism with her husband. She supported a statue for Charles Fourier and was present when it was inaugurated.

In 1903 she wrote an article in "La Rénovation" in which she called for equal rights for men and women and specifically asked for women's right to vote. She died in 1906 in Paris.
