Louis Rouffe was the son of traveling artists. One of his sisters took care of him in Marseille, where he studied at the Lycée Thiers. When he was seventeen years, old he started his acting career. In 1872 the Théâtre de l'Alcazar engaged him as the replacement of mime artist Charles Dubarau. In 1873 Dubarau called him to Bordeaux, where he performed for one season. In Bordeaux his daughter Alida was born. He returned to Marseille in June 1874. There he would be successful as Pierrot for ten years. On 2 December 1875 he married Joséphine Gaudefrin (1852-1920), the mother of his daughter. In 1879 he co-signed the birth certificate of Caroline, the daughter of the actress Paula Brébion. The father was unknown, but in 1881 he lived with Brébion at 34 rue Curoil in Marseille. He suffered from tuberculosis and after a few months in Algiers, he returned to the stage for a last time in September 1885. He died on 21 December 1885. Over 10,000 people attended his funeral at the Cimetière St.-Pierre in Marseille. His grave monunent was created by Joseph Letz (1838-1890) wilt a medallion by Émilde Aldebert (1827-1924).
