Anton Prokesch von Osten was born in Athens as the son of the Anton Prokesch von Osten (1795-1876) who was enobled in 1871. Anton the Younger was a military officer and a writer. He married the actress Friederike Gossmann in 1861. From 1866 they lived at a villa in Gmunden that had originally been built in 1858/1859 for Theresia Noë von Norgberg. It was often called the Grillenvilla after a famous role that Friederike had played.

Together with Friederike he developed social and cultural activities in Gmunden. He died there in 1919 and he was buried with his wife, who had died in 1906. Their daughter Johanna and his son-in-law Viktor von schleinitz inherited the villa.
