Josef Kalous was the son of a wealthy owner of rent houses in Vienna. He privately studied under Franz Jaschke together with his friend Hans Boehler. he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and at the painting school of Robert Scheffer. There he met Scheffer's daughter, who became his wife.

He worked as a postcard painter and a portrait painter during the First World War. After the First World War war was a teacher at Scheffer's school. After the Second World War he restored damaged paintings for the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. He also collected art.
