Karl Kalwoda started his career in 1918 as a musician at the Neuen Komödienhaus in Vienna. There he was 'discovered' as an actor and soon he performed in the plays of Raimund and Nestroy. He also appeared at the Blauen Bienenkorb.

He held engagements in Brünn, München and Teplitz-Schönau before he returned to Vienna in the early 1930s. He was engaged by the Raimundtheater and in 1938 by the Volkstheater, where he worked until his death in 1951. After the Second World War he appeared in several movies.
