Konrad Hallenstein was the son of the director and farce poet Ernst Hallenstein (d.1881). He took acting lessons in Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg. In 1852 he debuted in Frankfur am Main. He worked in Hamburg (1956), Königsberg ((1857) and Aachen (1858) before he became a member of the ensemble of the Königlich deutschen Landestheaters in Prague from 1858 to 1871. From 1871 to 1890 he worked at the Burgtheater in Vienna. In 1876 he was appointed Court Actor.

In 1890 he retired because he had memory problems. He had married the actress Katharina Hassel and they settled in Baden near Vienna, hoping that his health would improve. But on 27 September 1892 he went completely insane and he was brought to the private sanatorium of Dr. Löwy in Purkersdorf. He died there on the following day. He was buried at the Evangelischer Friedhof Matzleinsdorf in Vienna.
