Karl Hillebrand was the son of the author Joseph Hillebrand (1788-1871). As a student he took part in the revolution in Baden in 1848 and as a result he was imprisoned in Rastatt and sentenced to death. With the help of his sister Maria he escaped together with Wilhelm Liebknecht and they lived in Strasbourg for a while. Hillebrand moved on to Paris, where he became assistant to Heinrich Heine. Other than Liebknecht, Hillebrand turned away from politics and he continued his studies at the University of Bordeaux. After he was promoted he taught German at the École militaire at St Cyr, but in 1863 he obtained a professorship at the University of Douai. He gave up his professorship after the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 and he followed his companion Jessie Laussot to Florence. They married in 1879.
